About Carrabassett Valley Maine and Kingfield Maine
image

The mountains provide the backdrop for this tranquil, four season resort area. Recreational activities are numerous, including summertime biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, whitewater rafting, boating, swimming, fall foliage touring, winter skiing and snowmobiling.

The forests and river valleys provide an ideal habitat for a multitude of animals and birds. White-tail deer, moose, black bear, goose, ruffled grouse, fox, bobcat, snowshoe hare and coyote abound, providing ample hunting opportunities for the avid sportsman. The area's high elevation and clean, cool waters provide a good fishery habitat for growth and development. The north and south branches of the Dead River, Chain of Ponds and the Carrabassett River are excellent areas for the fly fisherman seeking trophy sized trout and salmon. Flagstaff Lake, with its 300 miles of wilderness shoreline and shallow depths, is perfect for small boats and canoes. Trout, salmon, and pickerel can be caught in its waters and it is considered the best lake in the northeast for Pickerel fishing.

With the first flakes of snow, come thoughts of winter skiing and snowmobiling. Sugarloaf/USA, Maine's largest ski resort, is located in the center of the beautiful Carrabassett Valley. With an elevation of 4,237 feet, 45 miles of trails and 400 acres of the most varied and challenging ski terrain in New England, the mountain offers world class skiing for skiers of all ability levels. Sugarloaf Ski Touring Center, also the largest in the state, features 85 kilometers of groomed trail loops for cross-country skiing. Snowmobilers will enjoy the over 300 miles of meticulously groomed trails, stretching north through Eustis to the Canadian border, west to Rangeley and east to Jackman, while locally maintained trails complement the ITS 84 and 89 thoroughfares. Snowmobile Magazine rates the region as one of the top 40 snowmobiling hot spots in the U.S. and Canada.

When traveling through the area, visitors will follow scenic Route 27 through the towns of Carrabassett Valley and Kingfield. The town of Carrabassett Valley is situated along the banks of the Carrabassett River and boasts magnificent views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Maine's second highest mountain and the Bigelow Range. It is here where the Appalachian Trail crosses Route 27 just north of the Sugarloaf/USA resort, which features an 18 hole championship golf course, rated among one of the best in New England. Kingfield, the largest town along the Route 27 corridor north of Farmington, is a picturesque New England community with a distinct Victorian character and is home to the famous Stanley Steamer Car museum.
